VAGINAL DISCHARGE
The presence of vaginal discharge during the day is not always a sign of an abnormality in the area; instead, it is normal most of the time.
Some of the reasons for the presence of vaginal discharge include:
Non-Infectious
- Normal physiological discharge
- Presence of foreign bodies (e.g., tampons)
- Dermatitis
Non-sexually transmitted infections
- Bacterial infection
- Candidiasis (yeast infection)
Sexually transmitted infections
- Chlamydia
- Gonorrhea
- Trichomoniasis
HOW ARE NORMAL SECRETIONS?
They are white or clear secretions that may change depending on the day of the menstrual cycle.
HOW ARE SECRETIONS FROM NON-SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS?
Bacterial infections and candidiasis are common occurrences, and these conditions arise due to a disturbance in the normal flora of the area. They are not sexually transmitted, and the partner does not necessarily need to undergo any treatment.
In the case of bacterial infection, an increase in secretions may be observed, along with sometimes a different odor than usual.
In the case of candidiasis, itching, pain, and thick white secretions may be observed.
In any case, it is advisable to consult your doctor.
HOW ARE THE SECRETIONS OF SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS?
Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis can exhibit abnormal secretions, but they can also be asymptomatic. It is very common for these infections to coexist with the presence of HPV.
Specifically, chlamydia can cause purulent vaginal secretions, but in 80% of cases, there are no observable symptoms.
Gonorrhea may present purulent vaginal secretions, but in 50% of cases, there are no symptoms.
Trichomoniasis can cause yellow vaginal secretions, often large in quantity and frothy. It is usually accompanied by a feeling of itching, pain, and dysuria.
In any case, you should visit your doctor.
WHAT SHOULD I PAY ATTENTION TO, AND WHEN SHOULD I CONTACT A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL?
Points that each woman should observe regarding her vaginal secretions include color, quantity, odor, frequency, and the sensation of itching. If anything beyond normal is noticed, she should get in touch with her doctor. Any presence of pain in the pelvic area or the presence of a fever should be considered red flags; in such cases, the woman should promptly contact a healthcare professional.
